Understanding the Site: The Big Picture

USEPA Superfund Process

Superfund is a complex, multi-phase process.

Ongoing Work: The site is in the Remedial Investigation phase (i.e. characterization) of the USEPA Superfund process. Hercules is collecting additional data and the USEPA is actively reviewing key environmental study documents. Read more in the Library.

The Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study phase of the Superfund process determines the nature and extent of contamination at a site, determines where cleanup is needed, tests whether certain technologies are capable of treating site conditions, and evaluates the cost and performance of those technologies.

Characterization (ongoing)

Hercules has made significant progress to move work forward by investigating the former facility with the overall goal of preparing the site for future beneficial reuse.

  • Thousands of environmental samples have been collected for analysis, including soil, air, groundwater, sediment, and surface water samples. The analytical results provide a set of data that characterize site conditions and guide next steps.

  • Together with USEPA, Hercules continues to investigate the former facility and consider the technologies available to address site conditions and support future beneficial reuse.

  • Hercules is committed to open dialogue and keeping our neighbors informed as the former facility moves through the Superfund process and toward beneficial reuse.
