The former Hercules facility has been part of the Hattiesburg community for over 100 years.
The facility shares a long history with the Hattiesburg community, supporting jobs, the local economy, and nearby neighborhoods, and that shared history continues to guide Hercules’ community involvement today.

1923
Hercules opens a manufacturing facility in Hattiesburg, becoming a long‑standing local employer.
1920s - 1980s
The plant provides steady jobs and economic support for local families for generations.
1974
Employment peaks at about 1,400 workers and the plant in Hattiesburg becomes one of the largest manufacturing facilities in Mississippi.
2008
Hercules was acquired by Ashland, a U.S. Company.
2009
Manufacturing operations at the Hattiesburg plant permanently end, closing an important industrial chapter.
2010 - Present
Focus on the closed facility shifts to environmental monitoring and site restoration, with regulatory leadership and oversight from the USEPA and MDEQ.

Hercules has a long history of working alongside the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), and the City of Hattiesburg. Hercules is committed to collaborating with the USEPA and MDEQ to address potential environmental concerns at the former facility. We support ongoing community engagement efforts to hear from our neighbors and take their concerns and suggestions into consideration as part of the decision-making processes associated with the former facility.
